Matthew is an experienced commercial intellectual property lawyer and registered trade mark attorney, with a particular emphasis on intellectual property identification, protection, management and commercialisation. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws (with honours) from the University of Queensland and a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne.
Over the last 20 years, Matthew has provided advice and assistance on the strategies and commercial structures to protect, expand, manage and commercialise valuable and significant intellectual property assets in Australia and internationally. He has also acted for a number of organizations involved in research and development, advising on the identification and protection of discoveries, and in respect of the acquisition, disposal and commercialisation of developments, including technology transfer, licensing and distribution arrangements.
Matthew also acts for a number of private health insurers, and over a long period of time, including during the period of significant regulatory change in the lead up to, and following, the introduction of the Private Health Insurance Act. As a result, he has developed significant expertise in this highly regulated and complex field. This has also led him to develop significant expertise in dealing with the range of legal and commercial issues faced by mutual organisations in the insurance, private health insurance, finance and payment systems industries.
Matthew is also involved in the development or review of self-regulatory and co-regulatory codes of conduct across a range of industries and for a range of industry bodies. He is experienced in developing and reviewing codes to meet the Australian Standard for codes of conduct, and has worked with a range of stakeholders, including government, consumers, academics, industry bodies and industry participants, to identify and resolve issues and improve processes.
Matthew is admitted to practice in New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, and federally.
