James Skelton

James is a member of Swaab Attorneys'​ commercial and intellectual property practice with a focus on the commercialisation of intellectual property rights, business advice and brand protection strategies.

James was a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly '30 Under 30 Awards'​, which provides industry-wide recognition for professional competence while highlighting a passion for the law and dedication to personal advancement.

Prior to joining Swaab he worked at the Federal Court of Australia with the NSW and ACT District and Deputy District Registrars. This gave James invaluable experience in the practice and procedure of the Court, being the principal jurisdiction in which IP matters are determined. He also has experience with matters in the Federal Circuit Court and the Copyright Tribunal. Prior to attaining a Juris Doctor at UNSW in 2012, he completed a Bachelor of International Studies, allowing him to gain international business experience at the University of Bonn, Germany. He successfully placed on the 2012 UNSW Law Dean's List for academic achievements.

James also has significant fashion and luxury retail knowledge from both a sales and retail operations perspective gained from over 7 years experience with an international luxury brand, providing a valuable commercial approach to his legal problem solving.

James was elected an Executive Councillor of NSW Young Lawyers in 2015 and is the Submissions Coordinator of the NSW Young Lawyers: Communications, Entertainment and Technology Law Committee. Most recently, he has edited and participated in drafting submissions regarding digital copyright infringement and copyright reform. James also sits on the board of prominent Sydney charity - The Aurora Group.
